ABOUT OUR COLLEGE

Sipna Shikshan Prasarak Mandal Amravati is established with the specific goals and mission of overall development of the people in Melghat – a tribal, remote and backward region in Amravati district of Maharashtra state. The institute intends educational, social, economic, agricultural development of the tribal and creates health awareness among them. Melghat comprising of two tehsil places i.e. Chikhaldara and Dharni is hilly terrain at the northern extreme of the Amravati district of Maharashtra, on the border of Madhya Pradesh, in the South-western Satpura mountain ranges. Melghat means ‘meeting of the ghats’, which describes the area as a large tract of unending hills and ravines scarred by jagged cliffs and steep climbs. It is renowned for ‘Melghat Tiger Project’ and ‘Gugamal National Park’ worldwide. Presently, the total area of the reserve is around 1677 km2. The forest is tropical dry deciduous in nature, dominated by teak (Tectona grandis). The reserve is a catchment area for five major rivers: the Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga and Dolar, all of which are tributaries of the river Tapti. Chikhaldara is a Hill Station and a municipal council in Melghat. Featured in the epic of the Mahabharata, this is the place where Bheema killed the villainous Keechaka in a herculean bout and then threw him into the valley. It thus came to be known as Keechakadara-Chikhaldara is its corruption.

Chikhaldara is the sole hill resort in the region assumed to be the ‘Nandanvan’ of Vidharbha, is situated at an altitude of 1118 m with highest Vairat point 1188m and has the added dimension of being the only coffee-growing area in Maharashtra. Chikhaldara has an annual rainfall of 154cm. Temperature varies from 390C in summer to 50C in winter. The place has a rich variety of flora and fauna with the nature’s beautiful architecture spread all over the region. Melghat region is hampered by innumerable problems and difficulties and specially lagged behind so far higher education is concerned. Arts, Science and Commerce College, Chikhadara, Distt. Amravati came into existence in 1996 with an intention to impart higher education to the tribal at their very door step and ensure their wellbeing, growth and safety. The college offers degree courses like B.A., B.Sc. and B.com with traditional and advanced subjects. The foundation stone of the institution was laid by the institutions’ president Honorable Shri. Jagdish M. Gupta, the Ex- Minister (Revenue & Forest Maharashtra State). The College was the first in Maharashtra to launch the advanced subjects like Petrochemical Science, Food Science at B.Sc. level. The college came in to existence under special provisions of Maharashtra State. Being a College in tribal region it is 100% aided college since the year of establishment. The college is aptly equipped with all the infrastructural facilities, qualified and devoted staff and student support services.
